The innovation unit of a globally operating NGO is working on the development of an AI-based app to diagnose life-threatening diseases in regions with inadequate medical care. The digital health application is intended to support local aid workers in carrying out examinations, collecting data and evaluating it.

The development process has been ongoing for several years. A lack of experience in the development of digital health applications, a lack of knowledge of regulatory requirements and limited resources repeatedly block important directional decisions and delay development progress. To clarify the right product strategy in this complex project environment and accelerate development, the organization sought a partner to provide expert guidance throughout the product development process.

msg industry advisors supported the customer over a period of several months with a comprehensive assessment and strategic alignment of the development project. In addition to identifying and mitigating potential risks, challenges and gaps in the product and development process, this also included examining the regulatory requirements relating to product approval.

For this purpose, the experts from msg industry advisors first developed a framework for the holistic evaluation of the product with regard to the dimensions of feasibility, viability and desirability as well as the project organization. By conducting interviews with the development team and various stakeholders inside and outside the organization as well as document reviews, a comprehensive picture of the challenges in the project was obtained, recommendations for action were derived and prioritized in the form of a roadmap. In a second step, the project team then examined the requirements and framework conditions for approval of the app as a medical device and developed recommendations for an efficient design of the approval process in the relevant regions.
